What to Wear For Your Photo Session

If you are anything like me, picking out what to wear can be a real challenge. There are so many different clothing choices to make...color, style, layering, texture etc., etc. Now imagine you are getting professional photos taken and you have to pick out coordinating outfits for your fiancé and you, or your entire family. It can be an overwhelming task. Nonetheless, what you wear in your photographs can make or break the quality of your images, believe me. I have come up with a few tips and color palette ideas to help you plan for your next photo session.

1. Plan Ahead
Do not wait until the night before to put outfits together. A week or so before your session start looking online for some inspiration (my fav is Pinterest). Do you want your outfits to be dressy or casual? Are you going to do an outfit change? It is important to think about these things ahead of time so you have time to prepare, whether that be doing laundry/ironing or going shopping. Some of my favorite go-to stores include Target, Old Navy, and Gap.

2. Pick A Color Scheme
You want to choose colors that compliment each other, and avoid matching too much. It is easiest to start with 2-4 main colors that go well together and then you can add in a pattern or pops of colors!

3. Consider Location & Weather
A helpful thing to consider when choosing what to wear is the location of your photo session. It is best to wear outfits that compliment your surroundings. For example, if there is a lot of greenery you may want to add some bright pops of color. If you are in a field of sunflowers you might want some subtle hints of yellow with a darker color to help stand out. Another equally important element to consider is the weather. Is it a 90 degree sunny day in June? Opt for cooler outfits, like a sundress for her and khaki shorts for him. Maybe you have decided to do a winter photo session... bring a stylish coat, mittens, and even a cute hat!

4. Accessories
Bows, headbands, necklaces, earrings, scarves, ties, socks, shoes, etc. are not something to forget about! These small details can add a lot to your photos.

4. Be Yourself
These are your photographs, be yourself! If you are uncomfortable or unsure of your outfit it will show in your images. Is there a style you prefer or that looks best on you? If so, rock it. Same thing goes for the little ones; make their outfits fun and unique to them. It will help them have more fun during the session!

THINGS TO AVOID:

  •  Logos - avoid wearing shirts that include large logos or characters, they are distracting in photos.

  • Dressing TOO casual - while you should be comfortable you should avoid wearing old shirts or worn out jeans.

  • Matching - remember you want your outfits to compliment each other, not match. Avoid everyone wearing all black or all white.

  • Hair Ties on Wrist - I am guilty of this. I always have a hair tie around my wrist. While it is useful for everyday use, not so much for photos...leave the hair tie at home or in your bag.
